About the Event
Please join us for a Chambersburg Civil War Seminars & Tours Lecture Series! Our next lecture will be: HISTORYtalks: The Political War in the Union Army by Zachery Fry. Cost is $5 per person. Zoom Login details will be sent with your email registration confirmation.
This talk will center on Fry's recent (2020) UNC Press book _A Republic in the Ranks: Loyalty and Dissent in the Army of the Potomac_. The book offers fresh insights into the heated political rhetoric that emerged from Union subordinate officers and enlisted men during the war. By examining untapped evidence from newspapers, voting returns, and correspondence with home front politicians, _A Republic in the Ranks_ demonstrates how the Army of the Potomac moved beyond worship of George McClellan, embraced the Republican message of hard war against the Confederacy, and helped propel Lincoln to a second term in 1864.
Zachery Fry is currently an assistant professor of military history at the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He received his PhD from Ohio State in 2017 and taught at the US Military Academy at West Point before moving on to CGSC. My book received the Edward M. Coffman Prize from the Society for Military History and was named one of the best Civil War books of 2020 by _Civil War Monitor_.
