About the Event
Please join us for a Chambersburg Civil War Seminars & Tours Lecture Series! Our next lecture will be: HISTORYtalks: The Political War in the Union Army by Zachery Fry. Cost is $5 per person. Zoom Login details will be sent with your email registration confirmation.
Talk Synopsis:
This talk will center on Fry's recent (2020) UNC Press book _A Republic in the Ranks: Loyalty and Dissent in the Army of the Potomac_. The book offers fresh insights into the heated political rhetoric that emerged from Union subordinate officers and enlisted men during the war. By examining untapped evidence from newspapers, voting returns, and correspondence with home front politicians, _A Republic in the Ranks_ demonstrates how the Army of the Potomac moved beyond worship of George McClellan, embraced the Republican message of hard war against the Confederacy, and helped propel Lincoln to a second term in 1864.
Biography:
